Substance Abuse Statistics Chenango County New York
Chenango County, New York, has seen a significant increase in substance abuse in recent years[1]. While substance use disorder prevalence data is not available on the county level[2], the county has experienced a decline in access to quality healthcare, with only a percentage of adults having healthcare coverage[3]. This lack of access to healthcare may contribute to the prevalence of substance abuse in the county. In 2020, almost 70% of all drug overdose deaths in Chenango County involved opioids, highlighting the severity of the opioid epidemic in the county[1].
The types of substance abuse commonly found in Chenango County include methamphetamine, heroin, and opioids[1]. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH)[4], New York has roughly 1.9 million citizens who have a substance use disorder. While specific data on the prevalence of substance abuse in Chenango County is not available, it is likely that these trends extend to the county level. The National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics[5] provides up-to-date information on substance abuse trends and statistics in New York State.
Demographic and socioeconomic factors may also contribute to substance abuse in Chenango County[6]. The county has experienced a decline in population between 2020 and 2021[7], which may indicate a lack of economic opportunity and social support. Additionally, the county has a high rate of substantiated allegations of abuse, which may contribute to a cycle of trauma and substance abuse[6]. While more research is needed to fully understand the factors contributing to substance abuse in Chenango County, it is clear that a comprehensive approach is needed to address this pressing public health issue[8].
