Substance Abuse Statistics Delaware County New York
Substance abuse is a significant issue in Delaware County, New York, as it is in many other areas of the United States[1]. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 7.8% of Delaware residents abuse drugs[2]. This is slightly lower than the national average of 9.7%, but still represents a significant number of individuals struggling with substance abuse. Additionally, the percentage of adults with health care coverage in Delaware County is only 80%, which may contribute to barriers in accessing treatment and support for substance abuse issues[3].
The types of substances abused in Delaware County vary, but opioids and alcohol are among the most commonly abused[4]. In fact, the NSDUH estimates that 4.5% of Delaware residents misuse prescription pain relievers, and 4.1% engage in heavy alcohol use. These numbers are higher than the national averages for both categories. Other commonly abused substances in Delaware County include marijuana and cocaine[5]. The prevalence of these substances highlights the need for comprehensive prevention and treatment efforts to address the diverse range of substance abuse issues in the area.
Several demographic factors contribute to substance abuse in Delaware County. According to the NSDUH, young adults aged 18-25 are more likely to abuse drugs than any other age group[5]. Additionally, males are more likely to abuse drugs than females, and individuals with lower levels of education and income are at a higher risk[1]. The population of Delaware County has also declined slightly in recent years, with a 0.0716% decrease between 2020 and 2021[6]. While these factors do not directly cause substance abuse, they may contribute to a lack of resources and support for individuals struggling with addiction and mental health issues[7]. Understanding these demographic factors is essential for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies that address the unique needs of the community.
