This is a 46% decrease from 2018 and is below the state rate of 126. The types of substances most abused in Essex County vary[2]. The region’s 14% juvenile drug use rate in 2018 was comparable to that of Westchester, NY, Middlesex, MA, and Lake County, IL. Prescription medications like opioids and illicit substances like heroin, cocaine, and marijuana are frequently abused. A major problem in the region is alcohol misuse as well as over 14 million Americans suffer from alcohol dependence or abuse.
Substance abuse in Essex County affects individuals from various demographic groups. However, certain groups are more affected than others. For example, in 2020, Essex County had an overdose mortality rate of 35 deaths per 100,000 residents, which is three times higher than the rate in 2000[3]. This increase was similar to the trend seen in many other areas across the country. Additionally, individuals who struggle with both substance abuse and gambling problems make up around 25% of the population dealing with addiction[4]. It is important to address the root causes of substance abuse and provide support and resources for those who are struggling, regardless of their demographic background.

Essex County New York Government Alcohol or Drug Disorders Services. Essex County Mental Health is designed to serve Essex County residents who are in need of mental health services for a range of diagnoses. However, individuals with concerns specific to alcohol or drug disorders, developmental disorders, and/or organic brain syndrome may be referred elsewhere for services. Admission of eligible individuals or families will be based on their ability to benefit from the range of services available. Essex County Mental Health provides case management as well as individual, group, school, and crisis services on an out-patient basis to Essex County residents of all ages
