Substance Abuse Statistics Ontario County New York
Ontario County, located in upstate New York, is not immune to the nationwide issue of substance abuse. According to data collected from various sources, including the American Community Survey and the enhanced Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, substance abuse is a significant problem in the county[1]. Ontario County Public Health partners with the New York State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to prevent injury and illness, including substance abuse[2]. Despite these efforts, substance abuse remains a pressing issue in the county.
The most commonly abused substances in Ontario County include opioids, alcohol, and tobacco[3][4]. In 2016, Ontario County experienced one of the highest rates of opioid abuse in the nine-county Finger Lakes region[3]. Additionally, the popularity of e-cigarettes has risen in recent years, especially among young adults and teenagers[4]. The misuse of prescription drugs is also a concern, with a survey of 7-12th graders in January 2019 indicating that a significant percentage of students reported misusing prescription drugs[5]. These statistics highlight the need for continued efforts to address substance abuse in Ontario County.
The statistics on substance abuse in Ontario County are concerning. In 2020, drug overdose death rates were higher than the statewide average in 10 of the 15 counties for which there is data[6]. Ontario County was not among the highest, but this data underscores the severity of the issue statewide. Ontario County Public Health collaborates with local healthcare providers, including UR Thompson Health and Rochester Regional Health-Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic, to address substance abuse[7]. Additionally, the Opioid Response Team is available 24/7 for those in need[8]. These efforts, along with continued education and prevention programs[2][9][5], are essential in combating substance abuse in Ontario County.
