Substance Abuse Statistics St. Lawrence County New York
St. Lawrence County, located in New York, has been significantly affected by substance abuse. According to reports, the county has the third-highest rate of burden from the opioid epidemic in the state[1]. The St. Lawrence County Addiction Services provides outpatient individual, family, and group counseling, telepractice services, and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to individuals suffering from substance abuse[2]. However, despite these efforts, substance abuse remains a significant issue in the county. In 2020, the county had a drug overdose death rate of 100 per 100,000 people[3]. These statistics highlight the severity of the substance abuse problem in St. Lawrence County.
Various substances are commonly abused in St. Lawrence County. In 2019, 6.8% of individuals reported having abused cocaine, 6.4% reported having abused methamphetamine, and 2.6% reported having abused heroin[4]. These substances, along with opioids, alcohol, and prescription drugs, contribute to the high rates of substance abuse in the county. The St. Lawrence County Addiction Services provides outpatient groups and individual counseling for substance use disorders[5]. However, these services may not be enough to address the problem fully.
Substance abuse has a significant impact on the community, including increased crime rates, health problems, and economic costs[3]. To combat this issue, there is a need for a multi-faceted approach that involves prevention, treatment, and harm reduction strategies. The St. Lawrence County plans to expand MAT, peer support, and harm reduction activities for underserved and high-risk populations[6]. Additionally, increasing access to quality healthcare and addressing the co-occurrence of mental illness and substance use disorders can help reduce the rates of substance abuse in the county[7]. By implementing these solutions, the community can work towards reducing the impact of substance abuse on the county and its residents.
